CNU Research Team Elucidates Lithium Growth Mechanism via AI-Driven Atomic SimulationProfessor Jin-Hyeok Cha’s research team at Chonnam National University (CNU), in collaboration with Professor Sang-Baek Park’s team at Chungnam National University, has elucidated the principles for suppressing non-uniform lithium growth and enhancing the stability of anode-free lithium metal batteries (AFLMBs) using 1-nanometer (nm) lithium fluoride (LiF) nano-islands.The joint research team formed a "nano-island" structure of LiF, approximately 1 nm thick, dispersed across the surface of a copper (Cu) current collector. The study confirmed that the exposed copper surface acts as a transport channel for lithium ions, while the Cu-LiF interface induces stable lithium nucleation, leading to uniform lithium growth. The CNU team utilized Density Functional Theory (DFT) and AI Neural Network Potentials (NNP) based Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations to analyze the lithium behavior at the Cu-LiF interface at an atomic level—a phenomenon difficult to observe through experimental methods alone. In particular, the team analyzed lithium adsorption and growth behavior according to the size and spatial structure of the LiF nano-islands. The findings revealed that the size and spatial arrangement at the nanometer level are decisive factors in determining lithium growth patterns and overall battery performance.Jeong-Min Shin, a master's student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at CNU, participated as the first author. She led the DFT calculations and AI-based MD simulations, making a fundamental contribution to clarifying the lithium growth mechanism based on the LiF nano-island configurations.Batteries utilizing the 1 nm LiF nano-islands demonstrated uniform and directional lithium growth without irregular clustering. Furthermore, the technology exhibited high initial efficiency and enhanced capacity retention in anode-free cells, proving that limited lithium resources can be utilized more effectively. The research results were published online on July 9, 2026, in the Journal of Energy Chemistry, a world-renowned journal in the field of energy materials with an Impact Factor (IF) of 15.6 (ranked in the top 1.9% of JCR).Professor Jin-Hyeok Cha stated, “Through AI-based atomic and molecular simulations, we were able to define the principles of lithium growth at nanometer interfaces that are challenging to observe experimentally. This study demonstrates the potential to scientifically design interface structures for next-generation batteries using artificial intelligence.”This research was supported by the Academic Research Innovation Support Program (Glocal R&D Support) of the Ministry of Education.

CNU Undergraduate Kwang-sik Kim Publishes Sole First-Author Paper in Global Journal ‘Advanced Science’Suggesting interface design directions for next-gen lithium metal batteries via AI-based molecular simulation.Achieved within just one year of research training... Proving excellence in undergraduate-led research capabilities.Kwang-sik Kim, an undergraduate student in the School of Mechanical Engineering at Chonnam National University (CNU), has achieved the remarkable feat of publishing a review paper as the sole first author in the world-renowned international journal, Advanced Science (Wiley, Impact Factor: 14.1, JCR Top 8.1%).The paper, titled “Redefining LiF as a Nanostructured Building Block for Interphase Engineering in Lithium Metal Batteries,” was published online on June 23, 2026.In this research, Kim systematically analyzed the formation mechanism of the Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI)—a key component in next-generation lithium-based secondary batteries. He reinterpreted Lithium Fluoride (LiF) not merely as a simple interface byproduct but as an active nanostructured building block, proposing a new interface design strategy for next-generation lithium metal batteries. Notably, he utilized AI-based molecular simulation to analyze the atomic-level interface formation process—which is difficult to verify through conventional experiments—and provided new research directions and insights for future battery design. The SEI is known as a critical factor determining the performance and lifespan of various next-generation batteries, including lithium metal, all-solid-state, and lithium-sulfur batteries. However, technical limitations exist in directly observing and controlling the interface structures and reaction processes formed inside an actual battery. This study holds significant academic value as it suggests a new approach to overcome these limitations by utilizing state-of-the-art AI-based computational science and molecular simulation technologies. What makes this achievement particularly noteworthy is that the paper is a review paper—a high-level publication that comprehensively summarizes core challenges and the latest research trends while proposing future directions, rather than a general research paper reporting specific experimental results. As review papers require a profound understanding and broad analytical skills of a specific field, it is considered exceptionally rare for an undergraduate student to publish one as the sole first author in a world-class journal.Currently, Kwang-sik Kim is conducting research in the laboratory of Professor Jin-Hyeok Cha at CNU’s School of Mechanical Engineering as part of an integrated bachelor’s-master’s program. This achievement was reached within about a year, including his research training period. Kim led most of the process, from discovering the research topic and conducting literature reviews to structuring the paper, writing the manuscript, and submitting it to the journal. Through this, he proved his research capabilities and growth potential to perform world-class research even at the undergraduate level.Furthermore, Kim is currently applying the AI-based interface design strategy proposed in this paper to actual next-generation battery research. The related research results have been submitted to Small, an international journal in the field of materials and energy, and are currently under review.“At first, even reading and understanding the papers was not easy, but I was able to gain confidence gradually as I studied and conducted the research step by step,” said Kwang-sik Kim. “The process of implementing a virtual atomic world using computers to solve real-world energy problems was very interesting. In particular, I find great appeal in the fact that simulation can help us understand phenomena that are difficult to verify experimentally and suggest new solutions.”Professor Jin-Hyeok Cha, Kim’s advisor, commented, “Kwang-sik is a very sincere student with a strong will for research. His understanding of research is excellent, and he has an outstanding ability to quickly grasp problems in new fields and find solutions on his own.” He added, “This paper is even more meaningful because the student carried out most of the process himself, from selecting the topic to researching materials and writing the manuscript.”Professor Cha continued, “It is a very exceptional achievement to publish a paper as the sole first author in Advanced Science within a relatively short period of about a year. I expect him to grow into a leading researcher in the field of next-generation batteries and energy materials.”This study is evaluated as presenting the role that AI-based molecular simulation can play in the field of next-generation battery interface design and energy material development. It is expected to provide important academic guidelines for the development of high-performance and high-safety next-generation batteries in the future. The research was supported by the ‘RISE Glocal University 30 Project’ of the Gwangju RISE Center, funded by the Ministry of Education and Gwangju Metropolitan City, and the Basic Research Program of the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF), funded by the Ministry of Education.

[Science & Tech] AI Simulation Unlocks Key to 'Explosion-Proof' Next-Gen Batteries: Chonnam National University Research Team
[Science & Tech] CNU Research Team Led by Prof. Jin-Hyeok Cha Unlocks Key to ‘Explosion-Proof’ Next-Gen Batteries via AI SimulationJoint research team from Chonnam and Chungnam National Universities develops a ‘semi-solid battery’ stable even at 100°C.World’s first verification of lithium-ion behavior in sub-nanometer spaces using AI-based molecular dynamics simulation.A research team led by Professor Jin-Hyeok Cha of the School of Mechanical Engineering at Chonnam National University (CNU), in collaboration with Professor Sang-baek Park’s team at Chungnam National University, has achieved a major breakthrough in securing next-generation lithium semi-solid battery technology. The team has successfully developed a battery that operates safely without the risk of explosion in high-temperature environments and has identified the movement of lithium ions for the first time in the world. The findings were published online in Nano-Micro Letters (Impact Factor: 36.3), a world-renowned academic journal in the field of nano and energy materials, garnering significant attention from the global scientific community.■ CNU Team Decodes the Secrets of ‘Ultra-Fine Spaces’ via AI SimulationThe core of this research lies in completely confining a liquid electrolyte within the sub-nanometer (tens of thousands of times thinner than a human hair) pores of a one-dimensional (1D) Metal-Organic Framework (MOF), transforming it into a semi-solid state. In particular, the CNU research team, including Professor Jin-Hyeok Cha and Researcher Jeong-min Shin, introduced ‘Neural Network Potential (NNP)-based AI Molecular Dynamics Simulation’ to understand physical phenomena within ultra-fine pores that are difficult to observe directly through experiments alone.Through these simulations, the team provided scientific data proving how lithium ions behave differently depending on pore size and the specific conditions under which they deposit more uniformly and safely on the electrode. This is highly regarded for moving beyond traditional experience-based battery design and suggesting an optimal design path through precise data analysis.■ Unmatched Safety: Stability Even at 100°CConventional lithium-ion batteries use liquid electrolytes, which pose a high risk of fire and explosion when exposed to high temperatures or external shocks. However, the semi-solid electrolyte developed by the joint research team maintained stable charge-discharge performance without degradation even in extreme environments of 100°C. This is because the 1D MOF structure designed by the researchers firmly holds the electrolyte, acting as a structural shield that prevents it from decomposing or leaking at high temperatures.■ "Opening a New Horizon for Next-Gen Energy Storage"Researcher Jeong-min Shin, who conducted the study alongside Professor Cha, expects this achievement to bring innovative changes not only to the electric vehicle (EV) market but also to industrial sites requiring high-temperature operations, aerospace, and the Energy Storage System (ESS) market, where safety is the top priority.Professor Jin-Hyeok Cha stated, “This study is significant in that it ensured both the safety and reliability of next-generation batteries by identifying microscopic behavior at the nano-level using AI simulations.”
